[h=2]Fire Performer, Thailand [/h] Photograph by Sean Hower This Month in Photo of the Day: Traveler Contest Images While working with a Discovery Channel group in Thailand, I saw this as part of the farewell dinner show. I wanted to get the shot, I got too close, and I and all my camera gear got coated in gasoline. Well worth it though!
[h=2]Penguins, Antarctica[/h] Photograph by Gaston Lacombe This Month in Photo of the Day: Traveler Contest Images At the Adélie penguin colony near Esperanza Base in Antarctica, the penguins color the snow with their feet as they shuttle between the sea and the colony.
[h=2]Taj Mahal, India [/h] Photograph by Colin Roohan This Month in Photo of the Day: Traveler Contest Images When light pours over the Taj Mahal everything else clears from your mind. The tour guides, the crowds, the construction statistics all become moot. When in the presence of something so divine, just be.
[h=2]Falling Petals, Japan [/h] Photograph by Hisao Mogi This Month in Photo of the Day: Traveler Contest Images I sat down on a stump for a rest after a stroll in Nara Park and watched the deer. They were eating fallen cherry blossom petals peacefully. Suddenly a strong wind blew and cherry blossom petals started to fall on the deer. It was like a shower of cherry blossom petals. In Japanese, it is called hana fubuki, which means flower snowstorm.
[h=2]Girl and Baobabs, Madagascar [/h] Photograph by Ken Thorne This Month in Photo of the Day: Traveler Contest Images Near the city of Morondava on the west coast of Madagascar lies an ancient forest of baobab trees. Unique to Madagascar, the endemic species is sacred to the Malagasy people, and rightly so. Walking amongst these giants is like nothing else on this planet. Some of the trees here are over a thousand years old. It is a spiritual place, almost magical.

[h=2]Rainstorm, Chile [/h] Photograph by Camila Massu This Month in Photo of the Day: Traveler Contest Images My sister in the south of Chile. We were sitting at home next to the fireplace in our southern lake house when it suddenly began to pour uncontrollably. Had to rush into the lake to take this snapshot!
[h=2]Khaju Bridge, Iran [/h] Photograph by Murat Bergi This Month in Photo of the Day: Traveler Contest Images This photo was taken in Esfahan, Iran, on Khaju Bridge. The look of the woman with attractive eyes toward her friend in front of the graphics of the bridge caught my attention.
[h=2]Playa Flamenco, Cuba [/h] Photograph by James Kao This Month in Photo of the Day: Traveler Contest Images The north coast of Cuba has some of the most spectacular beaches on hundreds of little islands called cayos. This dock is at Playa Flamenco on Cayo Coco, and the water is only a meter deep at its end and one can walk safely in the shallows for almost 200 meters further out. After taking a series of shots, I could not resist diving into the refreshing waters and feeling the sand beneath my feet!
[h=2]Formula One Spectators, Lithuania [/h] Photograph by Ruta Balciunaite This Month in Photo of the Day: Traveler Contest Images People watching a car-racing event from an abandoned building. Curiosity to see a Formula One race for the first time in Lithuania was bigger than the risk of standing on the edge of a building meant to be demolished. By now it is destroyed.
[h=2]Mountain Goat, Colorado[/h] Photograph by Morgan Estill This Month in Photo of the Day: Traveler Contest Images On a weekend trip to Westcliffe, Colorado, we drove to the peak of a mountain, got off and hiked the rest of the way. After a few minutes of taking photos, I turned around to see an old, wise buck walking right up to us, stopping maybe ten feet from us. It seemed as though he was just happy to have some company. He watched me set up my tripod for some landscape shots and followed me around like a dog for a good half hour and even appeared to pose for me when I took photos of him. I shot this at 24mm on a full frame digital camera—that's how close he was. It was an experience of a lifetime.

[h=2]Snowfall, Wyoming [/h] Photograph by Brian Preusser This Month in Photo of the Day: Traveler Contest Images While traveling on business I came across this magnificent winter scene. While similar in appearance to hoarfrost, this was a light dusting of new fallen snow.

The village of Gásadalur with the island of Mykines in the background. Until a tunnel was built in 2004, the 16 residents living in Gásadalur had to take a strenuous hike or horseback ride over the steep 1,300-foot (400-meter) mountain in order to make it to the other villages. It was a rare sunny day in the Faroe Islands and I had to wait until the clouds rolled in to provide some softer light. I decided to go with a long exposure (1 minute and 10 seconds) to illustrate the force of the wind and a serene sea among the isolated islands.
[h=2]Tai Chi, Shanghai [/h] Photograph by Edward Graham This Month in Photo of the Day: Traveler Contest Images I was jet-lagged after a 16-hour flight from Chicago. Since I was awake anyway, I figured I'd walk along the Bund for some photo shooting. There is a lot of activity in the morning: people riding bikes, running, flying kites, etc. I got lucky—this man was doing tai chi as the sun rose among the skyscrapers. It made for a great photo opportunity.

[h=2]Elephants, Serengeti [/h] Photograph by Steve Fujinaka, My Shot This Month in Photo of the Day: Animal Pictures On photo safari in the Serengeti in February 2012, we caught sight of this baby among a herd of grazing elephants. It was cute how the young elephant would walk in and out of its mother's legs as she was walking along.
